St. Peter's Health Hospice is Helena’s
only non-profit Hospice program.

What is Hospice care?

  • Hospice care addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of terminally ill patients and their families.
  • Care is provided in the patient’s home or place of residence (nursing home, assisted living, etc.).
  • We work closely with physicians, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living homes, and the Veteran’s Administration to assure Hospice services are available to anyone with a terminal diagnosis who needs care.
  • Patients/families provide input in the development of the plan of care and are directly involved in decision–making and care giving.
  • The hospice team provides education and support to family and facility caregivers.

Who is eligible for Hospice care?

Eligible persons have an advanced life–threatening illness such as cancer, end–stage heart, lung, liver, renal or neurological disease, ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, AIDS, etc. and have chosen comfort care rather than curative treatment.

  • The patient is usually referred to Hospice by their primary physician who needs to initiate care and certify that the person likely has a life expectancy of six months or less.
  • Hospice services are available to persons in Helena and in surrounding communities within a 60 mile radius.

What services are provided?

Hospice care is provided by an interdisciplinary team that includes:

  • Nurses certified in pain and symptom management and end–of–life care with RN on–call emergency support available 24 hours a day.
  • Certified Home health aides to assist with bathing and personal care needs.
  • A medical social worker to provide emotional support and assistance with accessing community resources.
  • A chaplain to provide spiritual support and counseling.
  • Trained volunteers to provide respite and companionship and specialized services including music therapy, pet visits, massage and energy work, relaxation and self-hypnosis, and the recording of life stories.

Additional services include

  • Medical  equipment and supplies, oxygen, and medications related to the terminal diagnosis.
  • Short–term respite stay in a skilled nursing facility.
  • Bereavement support to family members for up to one year following the patient’s death (includes individual and group support, bereavement mailing program, and access to Hospice library).

When should Hospice be considered?

The patient and family can make the best use of Hospice resources when an early referral is made.  The Hospice team becomes familiar with the person and their care needs and has the opportunity to build relationships with both the patient and their family. Serious problems like pain and symptom management can be addressed, and hospitalization may be avoided.

Who pays for Hospice care?

Hospice services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and many private health insurances. Coverage and eligibility are determined individually. No one is refused Hospice services because of lack of reimbursement.
