St. Peter’s Health is pleased to announce the appointment of Melissa Edwards, MD, MHA as its new Chief Medical Officer (CMO) following a national search.
Dr. Edwards is a board-certified OB/GYN, a highly respected surgeon, and an accomplished physician executive with extensive experience across hospital-based and outpatient services. She has served in senior leadership roles within medical groups and health systems, where she has been recognized for advancing quality and safety, strengthening physician engagement, and leading complex clinical operations.
“Dr. Edwards brings a deep commitment to clinical excellence, collaboration, and community centered care,” said Wade Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of St. Peter’s Health. “Her experience as both a practicing physician and a health system leader, combined with her passion for supporting care teams, makes her an outstanding fit for St. Peter’s and the Helena community.”
Throughout her career, Dr. Edwards has focused on building strong, high-performing care teams, improving patient outcomes, and creating environments where physicians and clinicians are supported in delivering safe, compassionate, and high quality care. Leaders and members of the medical staff who participated in the search process consistently identified her as an exceptional match for the organization’s mission and values.

St. Peter’s Health also extends sincere gratitude to orthopedic surgeon and medical staff leader Dr. Kerry Hale for her service as Interim Chief Medical Officer. Going forward, Dr. Hale will continue in her role as executive medical director at St. Peter’s, as well as caring for patients and our community.
