In 1883, the St.Peter's Episcopal Church parish vestry and the Montana Episcopal Diocese established St. Peter's Hospital.

On December 15, 1887, a permanent hospital was built. It contained seven private rooms, a chapel, a reading room, a ten-patient ward, a room for contagious cases and an operating room.  St. Peter's conducted a training school for nurses in that facility from 1909 to 1933.

In 1968 the hospital moved to the present location at 2475 Broadway. The building has undergone many internal and external changes over the years. A few of those projects include the construction in 2004 of a multi-story wing with all private patient rooms for more privacy and flexibility, a consolidated radiology department offering convenient and more efficient operation, a new main entrance, lobby, admitting/registration, imaging and laboratory services and Gift Shop. The Surgical Unit was added to the second floor; the third floor houses the Medical/Oncology Unit and Fourth Floor is the Women and Children’s Center.

In 2008, a new, three-story, 80,000 square foot medical building was constructed across the street from the hospital.  Features of the $15 million project include state-of-the-art exam rooms, laboratory services, diagnostic imaging services, infusion clinic and an outpatient pharmacy.  A pneumatic tube was built underground from the hospital to the medical office building to efficiently send physician orders and lab specimens in-between the buildings.

2011 ushered in construction to expand the Cancer Treatment Center to meet the growing needs of cancer services in the Helena Area. The patient-centric facility was designed with input from cancer patients in order to improve the over all treatment experience. Also in 2011, St. Peter's North clinic moved from its Montana Ave. location to its Ptarmigan Lane location.

St. Peter's Hospital is known for comprehensive care and community service. It is dedicated to the values of compassion and caring for all members of the community.
