Servings
Makes 6 tbsp
Ingredients
1 cup heavy cream
Salt (optional)
Honey, cinnamon, herbs, or maple syrup (options
Supplies- jar with screw-top lid (mason jar or clean peanut butter jar)
Instructions
- Pour cream and salt (start with a pinch) into the jar and tighten the lid. The lid can be reinforced with masking tape.
- Shake the jar for roughly 10-15 minutes
- The liquid will first turn to whipped cream, keep shaking, and the liquid will separate from the solid, giving you butter and buttermilk.
- Open the jar and strain off the liquid to use the butter. Taste butter and stir in more salt if needed, or any of the flavoring suggestions above.
- The liquid is buttermilk, which is different from store-bought, cultured buttermilk. The liquid can be used in place of water or regular milk in recipes.
- Store leftover butter and buttermilk in the refrigerator.
