Servings
Makes 6 tbsp

Ingredients
1 cup heavy cream
Salt (optional)
Honey, cinnamon, herbs, or maple syrup (options
Supplies- jar with screw-top lid (mason jar or clean peanut butter jar)

Instructions

  1. Pour cream and salt (start with a pinch) into the jar and tighten the lid. The lid can be reinforced with masking tape.
  2. Shake the jar for roughly 10-15 minutes
  3. The liquid will first turn to whipped cream, keep shaking, and the liquid will separate from the solid, giving you butter and buttermilk.
  4. Open the jar and strain off the liquid to use the butter. Taste butter and stir in more salt if needed, or any of the flavoring suggestions above.
  5. The liquid is buttermilk, which is different from store-bought, cultured buttermilk. The liquid can be used in place of water or regular milk in recipes.
  6. Store leftover butter and buttermilk in the refrigerator.
