St. Peter’s Health specializes in expert pelvic floor physical therapy, providing personalized care for individuals across all ages and stages of life. Whether you're experiencing pain, incontinence, or other dysfunction, our therapists offer personalized, evidence-based treatment to restore function and confidence.

What is the pelvic floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that support the bladder, uterus (or prostate) and rectum. These muscles play a vital role in bowel and bladder function, sexual function, and core stability. When these muscles are too weak, too tight, or not coordinating properly, it can lead to discomfort, dysfunction and disruption in daily life.

St. Peter’s approach to pelvic floor therapy

Our skilled physical therapists will perform a detailed evaluation, gaining an understanding of the unique components of your symptoms and goals. A posture and movement assessment is also performed to identify contributing factors to your symptoms. Together, you and your therapist will collaborate to address specific areas of concern and create a custom treatment program. This often includes techniques for managing symptoms and exercises for strengthening or relaxing the pelvic floor. Manual therapy and biofeedback may also be utilized to facilitate recovery.

Pelvic floor therapy provides patients with valuable insight to their bodies and enables them to self-manage their condition.

For Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence—or accidental urine leakage—is one of the most common conditions we treat. It can occur during activities like exercising, lifting, laughing or sneezing. Some people also experience a sudden, strong urge to urinate and may not make it to the restroom in time, or they may leak in response to triggers like running water.

While incontinence is common, it’s not something you have to accept as a normal part of life. Pelvic floor therapy can make a meaningful difference at any age.

Up to 80% of women see significant improvement—or complete resolution—of their incontinence symptoms with regular, targeted pelvic floor exercises.

Most patients begin noticing changes after just two sessions, and many complete their treatment plan in four to five visits.
